Dylan + Talia | Salt Lake City Temple

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

The Salt Lake City Temple is a wedding destination and venue for thousands of couples every year who come from all over the world. Members of the LDS Church are sealed and married inside temples in sacred ceremonies that are treated with the utmost reverence and respect. Photography is not permitted inside the Temple under any circumstances, so all photography takes place on the outside of the temple and around the grounds.

Temple Square is a central location for Salt Lake City and hundreds of people work nearby, not to mention the thousands of tourists that visit every year. There is always a lot of foot traffic so you will generally have people in the background of your images. The only way to avoid this is to shoot at times of the day where not many people are out and about. Dylan and Talia opted to shoot their first look and bridal portraits on a weekday in the early evening. This helped tremendously to avoid any foot traffic and also gave them the option of getting their pictures taken during the most favorable lighting of the day which photographers refer to as, "Golden Hour."

When you call to schedule your wedding at the Salt Lake City Temple, you are usually not given the option to choose what time of day you would like your ceremony to take place. Because of this, most couples exit the Temple after they are sealed and then proceed to have the bridal portraits taken during a time of day when the lighting might not be very favorable, i.e high noon. This is also a great reason to do your bridal portraits on a day separate from your sealing which also allows for more focus to be paid on pictures with family and friends. This is especially important when the Temple is rolling out couples every 20 minutes and you only have so much time to use any given spot for pictures because there is usually a line of couples and photographers waiting to take their turn. Dylan and Talia were able to get their bridal portraits done without any added pressure, or any sense of a time-crunch. This helped them really enjoy the experience of the photoshoot and it also helped me as the photographer for the very same reasons.
