Wedding, Bridals, and Engagements | Utah State Capitol Building

Updated: Sep 2, 2021

The Utah State Capitol Building, designed by Richard K.A. Kletting, is one of Utah's most iconic locations for weddings, bridals and engagements.

The gardens behind the building on the south side have green trees, lush grass, a beautiful fountain, and some other really neat structures. Not to mention the Capitol itself makes a great backdrop.

If you're lucky, you can also catch some of the cherry blossoms that bloom along the path surrounding the capitol. The blossoms only last a few short days every spring, and if you happen to be engaged during that time of year, its a photo opportunity you simply cannot miss.

And if you aren't lucky enough to get a shot with the Capitol's renowned blossoms, the cherry trees still make for stunning pictures in the late-spring and summer time.

The Utah State Capitol lets in the most beautifully filtered natural light through it's arched skylights on both the East and West side wings. This allows for stunningly crisp photographs and creamy skin tones. And as such, the time of day matters when shooting inside the Utah State Capitol. You will get more of that lovely filtered light if you shoot around around noon-time.

You can also get some very dramatic wedding shots if you hire a photographer who is experienced in off-camera flash. The benefit of adding an off-camera flash as a key light source is that you can create a much more dramatic image with dark, rich colors and deep shadows that play perfectly off the ornate buttresses and marble columns. The Utah State Capitol is the perfect venue if you want to achieve this look.

Another great shot requires venturing off to the the 3rd and highest level to photograph a bride against expanse of the grand tundra behind her. This background perfectly captures the neoclassical architecture that inspired the design for the Utah State Capitol and again, leaves you with another dramatic shot that cannot be achieved anywhere else but here.

Lastly, it wouldn't be a photoshoot at the Utah State Capitol without a picture with one of it's many steel, brass, and glass doors that surround its exterior. Again, this is a chance to get another dramatic shot if your photographer can utilize off-camera flash in addition to the beautifully filtered light.

The Utah State Capitol is nothing short of wow-worthy. From the outside, the impressive granite stone building with classic Corinthian columns offers unparalleled terrace views of Salt Lake City and the interior is just as impressive. Every part of the building is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and you simply cannot go wrong with choosing this iconic location as the setting for your wedding day, bridals, or engagement pictures.
